Sarah was the daughter of Major John Bell West and Catherine Morgan, daughter of famous Indian fighter David Morgan. She was the sister of Reverend James G. West who participated in the creation of West Virginia as a separate state representing Wetzel County.

She married the Reverend James Musgrave with whom she had eight children, of whom seven lived to adulthood.

Sarah is buried next to her husband James in Rymer Cemetery; they share a headstone, his name and information on one side and hers on the opposite.

Sarah's West Virginia Death Index record says that she died at age 86 years 6 months and 3 days, which would compute to a birth date of May 24, rather than May 2nd.
