He was born Aug. 24, 1923, in Butte, Mont., to Hugh and Signe Mempa. He was raised there and had also lived in Kirkland, prior to coming to Montesano 48 years ago.
Mempa served in the Army during World War II in New Guinea and the Philippines.
He had been owner of the Beehive Restaurant in Montesano since 1966 and sold the restaurant earlier this month.
Before that, he had been manager of General Telephone in Kirkland, then later in Montesano.
He married Joyce Peterson in 1977 in Reno, Nev. She survives in Montesano.
Mempa was a member of the Montesano Moose Lodge, VFW, Aberdeen Elks and Eagles, Footprinters and the Grays Harbor Country Club.
He enjoyed golfing, gambling, coin collecting, traveling to Maui, spending time with his family at Mason Lake and socializing with many friends and customers at the Beehive.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Jack, address unavailable; a brother, Lanny of Kirkland; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
A brother, Doug, and a sister, Viola Butcher, died before him.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 26, and 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday at the Whiteside Funeral Chapel in Montesano.
A celebration of his life is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, at the Grays Harbor Country Club. Private inturnment will be at the Satsop Cemetery.
