James Kendall was the son of Edward Kendall, brother of well known bugler Ned Kendall (#18927552). A clarinet player, Mr. Kendall was West Point Band's Director for three years. A professional clarinetist, first back in Boston, then in a touring company, and later in a San Francisco theater, he dropped dead one evening just before performing. A local article of the times indicates he was buried in San Francisco. "his funeral was under the direction of the Musical Fund Society, with some 90 of its members playing the funeral marches as the procession moved to the cemetery." http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/link.php?id=104183"

Census reports as well as early military records have his middle initial as "K", this newspaper report has it as "R". Another report has his place of birth as England (not true).

It appears he was buried in the Masonic Cemetery, then probably later moved to Woodlawn Cemetery in San Mateo.
