William was born in Georgia about 1815. He was married in 1847 to Harriet Wood in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia. He was a steam boat pilot on the Chattahoochee River and often sailed to the port of Apalachicola on the gulf coast via the Chattahoochee River and Apalachicola River and steamed back up the river to Columbus. He was listed on the 1850 census living in Columbus and on the 1860 census living in Apalachicola, Florida with his family. When war came to the south and to Georgia and Florida in 1861 he entered service in the Confederate States Navy. He was the pilot on the C.S.S. Chattahoochee. He along with many shipmates lost his life when the boilers exploded while the ship was at Blountstown, Florida on the 27th of May 1863.
