Mrs. Carter, a native of Sumter County, was born Jan. 25, 1921, a daughter of the late Linton Earl Godwin Sr. and Mary Ruth Sanborn Godwin. Her husband of 58 years, former state Sen. Hugh Alton Carter Sr., preceded her in death on June 24, 1999.
Mrs. Carter was a graduate of Plains High School and the University of Georgia. She was a member of Maranatha Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a homemaker, a member of the Georgia Federated Garden Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames.
The family will receive friends at Mrs. Carter's home, 380 Ga. Highway 45 South. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Maranatha Baptist Church, P.O. Box 307, Plains, GA 31780, or to Habitat for Humanity International, 121 Habitat St., Americus, GA 31709.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Laurie Tharpe and her husband Ed Tharpe of Macon, and Connie Collins and her husband Leon Collins of Byron; a son and daughter-in-law, Hugh Carter Jr., and his wife, Glenna Carter of Atlanta; a sister, Virginia Bostwick of Plains; her grandchildren, Dr. Carter Tharpe and his wife Joy Tharpe and Dr. Ansley Tharpe, all of Nashville, Tenn.; Katherine and Bill Turner of Charleston, S.C., Mary Elise Carter, Kathleen Carter and Emily Carter, all of Atlanta, and Carolyn Collins of New Haven, Conn.; a great granddaughter, Evie Tharpe of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Don and Carolyn Carter of Sea Island; a sister-in-law, Dot Godwin of Plains; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Pete Godwin, preceded her in death.
