John Carl (went by Charles) Grimes is thought to be the fourth of seven children of Jacob Grimes (b. c1722 in Germany, d. 1796 in Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina) and Christina Cordulla (Cordula?) (b. c1726 at Berner Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, d. 1778 at Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina) who married c1749 at Bern Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. After Christina died, Jacob remarried to a Margaretha and had an additional two children.

He married Barbara Frank, daughter of Wilhelm Franch (William Frank) & Barbara Walk, among the earliest members of Beck's Lutheran Church. One of the earliest spellings of Grimes was Kreim. They came from York and Adam Counties, Pennsylvania.
Charles and Barbara were the parents of nine known children, namely:

2. Susanna Grimes Long (1788-1855)
3. Jacob Grimes (1789-1811)
