Irene Rutschke, daughter of William and Anna (Haas) Rutschke was born March 23, 1924 on the family farm near Zeeland, ND. She attended country school thru the eighth grade and helped on the family farm.

She was united in marriage to Salvador J. Heiser on October 24, 1944 in Greenway Congregational Church at Greenway, SD in a double wedding ceremony with Edward Berreth and Dorothy Heiser. They made their home on a farm near Greenway where they were general farmers raising small grains and livestock. Salvador and Irene raised three children on the farm. Rene stayed very busy on the farm milking cows, raking hay, doing daily farm chores, and always making sure there was a meal on the table. In May of 1978 they semi-retired and moved into Eureka. Irene worked part-time as an aide at the Eureka Community Hospital. When her daughter, Diana and family moved to Eureka and purchased Oly’s Landing in 1979, Irene began as a cook at the Drive-Inn until she was nearly 70 years old. Her husband died May 6, 2002.

Irene enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren during retirement. During her retirement she volunteered at Second Hand Rose Store and Eureka Health Care Center. Beginning Christmas in 2007, Irene started flying to Texas for several months each year to spend time with her daughter, Robyn and family. In August of 2013, she began doctoring in Texas for orthopedic surgeries. She then remained living with her daughter and family until her death.

Irene enjoyed sewing, embroidery, quilting, exercising, word search puzzles, games, playing cards and keeping a clean house. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, St. Paul’s Ladies Aide and American Legion Auxiliary.
