In 1936, he served on the USS Badger. He owned a printing company for a time. He worked as a civilian, for the US government, in a few branches until retirement. Gil didn't like sitting still. In retirement, he continued to farm as much as he was able. He named his small farming property "Willow Hill", in honor of the farm home place with the Arnold Cemetery. That cemetery held his grandfather, great-grandfather and great-grandmother.
Gilbert's father, mother and grandmother were buried in Oakwood Cemetery, in Falls Church, Virginia. His urn was briefly buried between mother and father's graves in 1981, April 3rd. His urn was moved to Shenandoah Memorial Park, ten years later.
