A native of Spartanburg, Mr. Cooksey was co-owner of Oak Hall Hotel in Tryon and formerly had hotel interests in Georgia. He went to Tryon a number of years earlier and with Miss Clara Edwards, purchased Oak Hall.
He was former postmaster in Tryon and a former president of the Chamber of Commerce. During his tenure as president of the civic trade organization, much progress as made. A separate building and full-time secretary were provided.
During the two years prior to his death, he had also engaged in the real estate business.
Mr. Cooksey for many years was a resident of Spartanburg, a former Herald-Journal carrier and a former employee of the Spartanburg Post Office.
He was the husband of Gladys Darnell Cooksey.
