My grandmother told me the story of how William was born out of wedlock to ? Armstrong, who was working for a Mr Kimbrel (who got her pregnant). She said that William's mother went next door and stayed with Dave & Sallie Staples until the baby was born, then she left. William is listed in the 1850 & 1860 Shelby Co, AL census as William Armstrong, living with David & Sarah Staples, and living next door to both John & Benjamin Kimbrel (who it turns out are Sarah's brothers). He later took the last name of Kimbrel. I have no idea who his mother was & don't know whether John or Benjamin is the father.
