Enlisted, 1894, in Troop A Cavalry, NYNG, New York City. He saw field service with Troop A during the Brooklyn Trolley Strike, January, 1895. February 9, 1895, Troop A was reorganized into Squadron A, he was assigned to Troop 1. Squadron A , April 27, 1897, paraded as escort to President Harrison at the dedication of the Grant Monument. He was discharged from Squadron A, January 4, 1898.

Mexican border era ( 1916 ), World War 1. When Squadron A was called up for service on the Mexican border, he enlisted in Depot Troop A, Squadron A. He continued his service with the NY State Guard into World War 1 and discharged, March 19, 1919.

His son Sydney Longstreth W. Mellen served in Troop K, 101st Cavalry ( Squadron A ) 1930 - 1932 and in Company F, 51st Regiment ( Squadron A ) , New York Guard during World War 2.
