Phillip was the son of Phillip Peter Ernst and Emma Brading. He immigrated to the U.S. about 1878.

On Nov 25, 1880 in Northumberland he married Harriet C. Wilkins, daughter of Oliver Wilkins and Eliza Jenkins.

Their children were Emma M, George S, twins Jessie and Florence Harriet, Mary, Phillip Peter, and Lily Orise. (There may have been more because there is a 9 year gap between Emma & George; the rest of the kids are all 2 years apart).

They appear to have divorced around 1900. In 1900 he was living in Northumberland, NH listed as married (about 18 years). Harriet was living in the Coos County Alms House, listed as married (with no children with her). Daughter Emma had been married 2 years and was also here with her 5mo old son, Percy Ball. (Her husband Willard Ball was living in Bloomfield, VT with his parents and his 2yr old son William D. Ball... in 1910 Emma and Willard were back together). Son George, age 9, was living with Melvin & Isabelle Hall in Stewartstown; Florence, age 8, was living with William & Ruth Elliot in Colebrook; Mary B, age 6, was living with Joseph & Flora Paul in Colebrook. I can't find where Phillip, age 4, and Lily, age 2, were boarding in 1900.

Sadly, in 1910 I found George, Florence, Mary, and Phillip all living in Laconia as inmates in the New Hampshire School for Feeble Minded Children. That was always a dumping ground for kids no one wanted. Still no trace of Lily so either I just haven't found her yet, or someone adopted her, or she died young.

In 1910 and 1920 Phillip is listed as divorced. On his death certificate he is listed as widowed, but I can't find a 2nd marriage for him. I believe that was just a mistake. His wife, Harriet, married three more times.
