He died in American Fork Canyon the day before his 29th birthday.

Melvin Robert Day, 28 Highland, died instantly in American Fork Canyon Tuesday when struck by a bullet just above the heart. The accidental shooting took place about 4 pm. near the Martin campground, one mile above North Fork.
It is reported the shot was fired by Michael Nicholson, 22, New Haven, Conn, who told Deputy Sheriff Boyd Durrant he did not see the victim. He said he heard rocks fall and when he raised his gun to look through the weapon's telescopic sight, It accidently discharged.
Young Nicholson with two Connecticut companions, all Investigators in the New England, LDS mission, came to Utah at the invitation of Kent Day, a nephew of Melvin, who recently returned from the mission. These four men and Del Sanders, brother-in-law to Kent, made up the hunting party which had not left home an hour earlier.
Melvin R. Day was born Oct, 23, 1928, in American Fork, a son of Orvil Cox and Otes Strasburg Day. Aug. 20, 1955, he married in the Mesa LDS Temple to Eloyce Fuller, Phoenix, Ariz.
He was a graduate of the American Fork High School and was in his senior year at the Brigham Young University where he was studying towards an engineering degree In electronics. He filled a mission for the Church in California from 1950 to 1952 and spent two years In the army with overseas duty in Alaska. He has been an active member of the Highland Ward, serving in all the auxiliaries and at the time of his death was ward clerk.
Surviving are his widow, a small daughter, Denise, his parents, and the following brothers and sisters, Mrs. Ralph W. (Kate) Rogers, O. Wayne, Mrs. Don (Dora Bringhurst, Carl, Mrs. Jerry (Fern) Pace, Mariam, all of Highland; Lawrence, Jean, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Cllve (Stella) Norman, Lehi and Mrs. Myron O. (Esther) Smith, American Fork.
