March 18, 1921 - Humboldt Republican - Mrs. Pauline Ulrich Metzner was born in the province of Selicia, Germany, near the city of Breslan, March 5, 1848. Her father and mother died while she was very young, and at the age of 12, an orphan, she came to America, coming immediately to Chicago, where she remained for three years. In 1875 she removed to Marseilles, Illinois, where she resided three years, leaving for a nine months trip to Germany.
Returning to America she lived in Chicago for three years, when she removed to Humboldt to remain until she passed into her immortality, Saturday afternoon, March 12, 1921 at five o'clock.
In 1872 at Chicago she was married to Julius E. Metzner who passed from this life January 10, 1917. August 23, 1905 she lost two daughters, Pauline and Ida, by drowning in the Des Moines River.
She leaves a son Julius F. of Chicago, Illinois, and a daughter, Mrs. Louise Hubbard of Boone, Iowa, to remember her loving care, her active life and her many virtues.
Metzner was for forty years active and consistent member of the Congregational church of Humboldt and a regular attendant until her illness kept her at home.
She had many sorrows in her life but through them all her heart found rest in her religion. The lessons of her life are fidelity, loyalty and endurance, of a quiet disposition, she had many friends. Her life was lived largely in her home. She spoke often of her children and their interest in her welfare.
The funeral was held at the Congregational church, Monday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. H.O. Spelman, officiating.
