Michael Devin was a French Huegonot who emigrated from Dublin, Ireland. One source says the name originally was "Devinne."

He settled in Hagerstown, Maryland, where he married Elizabeth Rice, who had emigrated from England, on Jan 9, 1781 in Harford County, according to "Early Marriages of Maryland". He may have had a sister Catherine who married John Bond on Sept 6, 1791. He moved his family to Washington County, Ohio where they homesteaded near Marietta, Big Bottom, and Relief.

The children of Michael and Elizabeth included Thomas Devin (1792-1873) and Michael (1795-?). Other children may have also included Elizabeth, Catherine, Ellen, Sarah and John.

Michael was a farmer in Washington County. He died in Relief in 1822.

Note: Beckett Cemetery is in a wooded area above a cow pasture on the Beckett Farm on the intersection of Swift and Echo Valley Road (T104). Get a map from the library in Beverly, cross the bridge into Waterford, take highway 32 on the right and go past the power plant until you reach that intersection. The gate is on the intersection and the property belongs to the McCutcheons across the street and also at the Beckett Farm on Echo Valley Road. So go to either house to obtain permission to enter the cow pasture and then venture up the hill and into the woods to find the cemetery.

Inscription

In Memory of Michael Devin, who died Jan. 2, 1822 in the 73rd year of his age.

Attend vain mortals to my call,
Who think no dangers nigh;
Know you before grim death must fall,
And lie as low as I.
