Alva Jean Oliver Byrd was born in Sumter SC on May 27, 1940, a daughter of the late Sam Caleb and Nida Bochette Oliver. Her loving grandmother, Lula Bochette, raised her from age 6 weeks. She met and married the love of her life, Jesse S. Byrd Jr, after she and her grandmother moved to Hartsville when she was a teenager. She loved and labored alongside her husband and children for 57 years on the 400 acre family farm they purchased and developed from scratch.
Jean held very few material possessions because she was notorious for spending most of her resources on others. She was inventive, thrifty and intelligent. She taught and shared these talents with everyone as she never met a stranger. The one thing she wanted more than anything was to be loved by all of us who loved her. She loved us excessively! She felt a need to earn our love, even though we assured her daily that this was not necessary because we loved her unconditionally. She loved without limits and she never let the sun go down without letting it be known exactly how she felt.
Jean attended Middendorf Baptist Church where she enjoy activities with her husband, children, grands and great-grands. She was and always will be a beautiful soul who made a positive, loving impact on our lives... that will live on for eternity.
She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Jesse Stevenson Byrd, Jr. of Hartsville, SC; son, Jesse Stevenson "Steven" (Cindy) Byrd, III of Hartsville, SC; daughters, Laura B. (Eddie) McKenzie of Hartsville, SC, Melissa B. (Dennis) McCoy of Hartsville, SC; grandchildren, Bobbie M. (Scottie) Hoffman, Jessi M. (Haddon) Childs, Eddie Ramzie McKenzie, Jeanie Nicole McCoy (Corey Ian Smith), Ryan Dennis McCoy (Amber Noel Jordan), Jesse Stevenson "Jeb" Byrd, IV, Roxie Cathryn Byrd, David William Byrd; great grandchildren, Isaac McKenzie Hoffman, Laura Polly "Lolli" Childs.
