DEATH OF A GALLANT NAVY OFFICER - Capt. George W. Doty, who died in New York city on the 17th instant, entered the navy January 1, 1833. He spent seventeen years and three months on sea service, was nearly three years on the coast survey, over ten years on shore duty, and had been on the reserved list nearly five years. He was in the navy over thirty-five years.

In the book, The Doty-Doten Family in America: descendants of Edward Doty, an Emigrant By The Mayflower, by Ethan Allen Doty, pub. 1897, George Washington Doty is person #3532. His entry:

3532. GEORGE WASHINGTON DOTY, son Isaac Doty and Eliza beth Hammond, b. White Plains. Westchester Co., N. Y., 1809; m. Washington, D. C., 1854, Julia Lynch, dau. Dominick Lynch. Her sister became the wife of Commodore Charles Wilkes, the distinguished naval officer and explorer. Her father was a large landholder in Oneida Co., N. Y. George Washington Doty was Post Captain and Brevet Commodore of the U. S. Navy. Was appointed midshipman Jan. 4. 1833, and gradually rose in rank to above. He d. New York City, April 17, 1869. His widow m. Henderson and lived, 1886, Washington. She was engaged in Indian Bureau, Dept. of Interior.

Child:
3907. i. George Henry, b. 1859. He was appointed a cadet In the U. S. revenue cutter service, May 22,1878; commissioned 3d Lieut, June 11, 1880; 2d Lieut., July 1, 1886; resigned from the service, Nov. 12, 1889. He served on a number of revenue steamers on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, and was with the second expedition of the steamer Corwin to the Arctic regions, in 1881, in search for the missing steamer Jeannette. He is now connected with Little, Brown & Co., publishers, Boston, Mass.
