MISHAWAKA — Marvin L. Hughey, 76, of Mishawaka, died Wednesday, May 13.

The Battle Creek, Mich., native was born Oct. 5, 1938, to the union of Glenn and Lenore (Hurt) Hughey.

Marv graduated from Battle Creek Central High School with the class of 1957 and then attended Bethel College in Mishawaka.

On July 24, 1960, he married Janet Elliott at Cedar Road United Missionary Church in Osceola.

He spent many years on the road as a regional semitruck driver for Northern Steel Transport of Toledo (Ohio) and Stripco Inc. of Osceola. He was previously employed at C.G.Conn Ltd. in the organ division in Elkhart and Wheelabrator in Mishawaka.

Marv was a member of the Michiana Concert Band, New Horizons Band and the Marshall County Church Orchestra. He enjoyed playing his E-flat tuba for solos at Hillcrest Baptist Church, where he was a member. He sang first tenor in several quartets and formed a mixed trio at the church; music was a major part of his life.

He accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior at age 10 and walked with him the remainder of his life. “Christians are not perfect, but forgiven.”

Marv was a member of Toastmasters International communication and leadership organization for 15 years and earned an Advanced Toastmaster Bronze (ATM-B) educational designation. He was co-chair of a district conference in 2005, which included all of Indiana and one-third of Kentucky.

In addition to his parents, Marv was preceded in death by his son, David, and brothers Ralph and Raymond Hughey.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Janet Hughey; his daughter, Debra (Paul) Parsons of Elkhart; grandchildren Benjamin Parsons of Elkhart, Stephanie (Caleb) Reinking of Osceola, Jennifer Parsons of Elkhart and Hannah Hughey of Fort Wayne; his great-granddaughter, Haven Reinking; and his sisters, Barbara (Jose) Tijerina and Joyce Holder, both of Battle Creek.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 18, at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 59220 Bremen Highway, Mishawaka, with calling for an hour prior to services at the church. Calling will also be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 17, at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola. Interment will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

The family’s preferred memorial is to Joslin Diabetes Center, 50-year Medalist Research, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215.
