He served in the Mexican War.

Moved to Washington, DC by 1850 where he was working as a government clerk.
In 1860 he was listed as a notary public in Washington, DC.
He served in the Civil War as Lt. Colonel and Colonel in Field and Staff of 5th Battalion Virginia Reserves (Henry's Regiment, Virginia Reserves) which was organized Sept. 12, 1864. Entered Confederate service May 28, 1864 and was elected Colonel Sept. 12, 1864. Under Brig Gen. James A. Walker's Command on line of the Richmond & Danville and South Side Railroads Nov. 30, 1864.
Lived in Washington, DC at the time of his death, which was due to dropsy (old-fashioned or less technical term for edema).
