Katy Love Lumpkin Blackburn died May 9, 2015. She was born February 28, 1923 in Winston Salem, NC.
Katy attended Salem College where she majored in Music. In 1944, she married G. Thomas Lumpkin, Jr., the father of her children. She began her career teaching music, then became a kindergarten teacher. In the 1950s and 1960s, she helped found and direct two of the largest church-related private kindergartens in North Carolina at White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh and Wake Forest Baptist Church in Winston Salem. In 1966, she married Dr. J. Glenn Blackburn and moved to Alexandria VA, and then to Raleigh before moving to Blowing Rock. She loved her family, music, crossword puzzles, a good book and bridge.
She is survived by her daughter Kathryn L. Kitty Lumpkin of Blowing Rock and son G. Thomas Lumpkin and his wife Vicki, and sister Peggy Love Day, all of Santa Fe, NM.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston Salem. A musical memorial service was held at Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blowing Rock, followed by a reception at the Blowing Rock Country Club.
