Lester John Nielson (LJ) returned to the waiting arms of his wife and eternal companion and loving Father in Heaven March 14, 2001.
He tried very hard to make it to 100.
Dad was born in Stockton, Utah, October 21, 1902, the son of John and Laura Nielson. His special musical talents brought the family to Salt Lake City where he first graduated from LDS High School and later from the University of Utah.
He married Venice Hinckley, December 23, 1926 (later solemnized in the Salt Lake City Temple).They were the proud parents of two children Barbara Hollands and Lester J. Nielson Jr. (Linda); ten grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.
LJ was truly a man for all seasons- educator, musician, historian, social worker and active church member. He worked for over 40 years in the Granite School District and was principal for much of that time. He was one of the youngest principals in Utah (Sherman Elementary School 1928-38) and ultimately received the highest honor as National President of Elementary School Principals.
Music was always Dads first love - he had his own orchestra (Moon Diana)during the late 20's and early 30's traveling around the intermountain west. Saxophone and violin were played in the band but he could play anything he set his mind to - viola, piano, tuba or harmonica. He was also a gifted singer performing not only with male choruses but also with his beloved barber shop quartet (made up of other principals).
Dad prided himself in obtaining three masters degrees as he extended his education at the University of Utah, Wisconsin, Harvard and Berkeley. He resided in the Salt Lake First Ward during much of his early adult years but later was in the Crystal Heights 2nd Ward where he served in the bishopric, was called to a stake mission and also taught.
He was preceded in death by his wife, daughter-in-law (Jackie Nielson), son-in-law (Doxey Hollands) and granddaughter (Janice Heath).
Services will be held on Monday, March 19, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, where friends may call Sunday evening from 6p.m. - 8 p.m. and on Monday morning one hour prior to the services. Interment will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
