Elsie Sigel was the granddaughter of Civil War General Franz Sigel. She and her mother worked as settlement workers and Christian missionaries to Chinese immigrants. On June 18, 1909, her murdered body was discovered in a trunk at 782 Eighth Avenue, Manhattan, in the apartment of a Chinese man, Leon Ling, whom Elsie had helped and with whom she became romantically involved. It was assumed she had been murdered on the day of her disappearance, June 9. Leon Ling disappeared, his whereabouts never determined. Leon Ling remains the prime suspect in the minds of many, perhaps having murdered Elsie in a fit of jealousy, but Elsie Sigel's murder was never solved.
