Funeral services for Mrs. Beach Tomorrow

Obsequies Over Widow of Founder of Colorado City Set for 2 o'clock

Funeral services for Mrs. Sophia D. Beach, widow of M.S. Beach, who with R.E. Cable founded Colorado City in 1859, will be held from the Swan & Sons undertaking rooms at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Mr. beach died Monday night at a hospital at the age of 80 and had been in good health until a few days before her death. She is survived by Mrs. J.C. Small of Portland, Me., a sister; Mrs. F.B. Waldron, Portland, Me., niece; Dr. R.D. Small of Portland, nephew; John C. Small, Newton Center, Mass., nephew, and Dana Waldron of this city, great-nephew. Mr. Beach built the first house at Colorado City in August, 1859. The logs were cut from Cheyenne Mountain.

Mr. Beach was the first county recorder under the government established in El Paso County, and represented the county in the first terrotorial legislature in 1861. In the fall of 1862 he enlisted in the Second Colorado Infantry and was ordered east to join Gen. Blunt's army which took part in eight major engagements. He became a first lieutenant and served in several Indian campaigns.

Beach was at one time the owner of Manitou mineral springs, which were sold for $300.

Mrs. Beach had made her home at 411 Cheyenne Road.
