Leah L. Crawford, 79, formerly of Americus, Kansas, died on September 29, 2012 at Holiday Resort Care Center in Emporia, Kansas.
Leah was born on August 28, 1933 in Emporia, the daughter of Leroy M. Henderson and Muriel A. Holman Henderson Callahan. She married Ross L. Crawford on April 5, 1968 in Wichita, Kansas. He died on February 3, 2002 in Topeka, Kansas.
She is survived by: daughters, Suzan Johnson of Junction City, Kansas, Shairlynn Platt of Emporia, Sherry Lasley of Bunch, Oklahoma, Sheila Kivi of North Pole, Alaska, Stacy Welsh of Emporia; and Shelley Wright of Emporia; brothers, Forrest Callahan of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, and Ronald Callahan of Rapids City, South Dakota; eighteen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by a daughter, Scherri Buchtel; a son, Kenneth R. Crawford; brothers, D.C. Germond and Gilford Henderson; sisters, Darlene Willett and Gwendolyn Watkins.
Leah graduated from Emporia High in 1951. She worked as a waitress for many years in Emporia, beginning with Blaylock’s Restaurant, and her last waitress job was at Commercial Street Diner. She also worked at St. Mary's Hospital for numerous years and also Americus Grade School.
She worked in the home healthcare system for several years prior to December 19, 2011. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Emporia. Leah was a foster parent, as well as a volunteer for SOS and at Holiday Resort.
Cremation is planned, with a private memorial service to be held at a later date. The family requests no flowers, but instead memorial contributions to Emporia Friends of the Zoo, S.O.S. Shelter or Holiday Resort Care Center. Donations may be sent in care of the funeral home.
