George A. Lorenger, 101, of Sioux City died Friday, April 4, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Third Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. James E. Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.

George A. Lorenger was born May 6, 1901, in Lincoln, Neb., to Paul and Elizabeth (Bourelle) Lorenger. In 1907, the family moved to Walthill, Neb. The family included three brothers, Walter, Leonard and Everett, and three sisters, Victoria, Laura and Virginia. He graduated from Walthill High School.

He married Leta Edna Gatzemeyer of Winnebago, Neb., on Dec. 26, 1923. They moved to Sioux City in February 1924, where he became employed with Swift and Co. He worked in management and retired in 1966 as supervisor of the pork division. While employed with Swift and Co., he received several achievement awards for many creative product innovations including the introduction of Swift's Premium Brown and Serve Sausages. Mrs. Lorenger passed away in February 1970.

He joined the Morningside Lodge 615 of the Masons in 1930, where he became a 32nd Degree Mason in 1948. He also was a member of the Scottish Rite, Abu Bekr Shrine Temple and Morningside Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, where he was a past Patron. He was a former president of the Woodbury County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League from 1956 to 1957, and was involved in the Iowa State chapter of the league. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and was a former scoutmaster of Troop 2 Joy School.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Peirre and Margaret Lorenger of Northridge, Calif., and Wesley and Arlene Lorenger of Des Moines; a brother, Everett Lorenger of Placerville, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Wendel; an infant daughter, Lorraine; two brothers, Leonard and Walter; and three sisters, Victoria Thompkins, Laura Peterson and Virginia McGee.

Pallbearers will be Jim Lorenger, Rex Andersen, Donald "Mac" Coons, Darrell Smith, Elmer Sisson Jr., John Pettit, Timothy Green and Shelbey Green.

Memorials may be directed to Third Presbyterian Church.
