As an adult, Richard moved to Sacramento, California. At some point, he met Bertha Hillhouse, and married her in 1915. They divorced, but may have remarried in 1931. After she died in 1932, he then married Cora Rice about 1935.
Richard worked as a horse dealer, stockman, and miner, and finally as an animal trainer on his ranch near present-day Citrus Heights, California.
In the early 1960s, he and Cora moved north to Browns Valley in Yuba County, to be close to her family, and he died there in Marysville, California, in 1962.
