Ted was adopted as a young child by Lou and Carl Sheppard after their son, Carl Jr. died. He grew up in Parkersburg, West Virginia as an only child. He was in the Army in WW II (enlisted Apr 10, 1943). He married Elizabeth Jacqueline "Betty" Jones on Sept 28, 1947 in Wood County, West Virginia. They had three children.
