Union companies in the Civil War were identified by letter rather than number. What appears to be a '4' on the grave marker is the remains of an 'H'. Bailey Watson served in Company H, 71st Pennsylvania Volunteer regiment, assigned for much of the war to the Second Brigade, Second Division, Second Corps of the Army of the Potomac, which saw action in every major Eastern theater engagement from the Peninsula campaign to the siege of Petersburg. Bailey was mustered in on July 1, 1861 and mustered out on July 2, 1864.
