A larger-than-expected crowd gathered Friday, May 1, to pay respects and share stories of Lance Arnegard, 61, who passed away April 22.

Arnegard served in the Public Works Department for 22 years, carefully tending the public parks, especially Aurantia Park where a crowd gathered Friday in tribute to the maintenance worker.

Arnegard’s cousin, Mark Arnegard, shared the family story of how Lance came to Highland.
“Our grandfather came to this country from Norway,” he said. “Lance grew up in Ohio. My dad had a plumbing shop in Redlands and needed some help, so Lance came to Redlands to work with him.

When the shop closed, Lance worked at a couple of construction jobs before he came to work in Highland. He was thrilled to get the job with the city of Highland.”
Mark added that even when Lance was sick and the doctor took him off the job, “ ... he said he was bored and wanted to get back to work.”

City Manager Joe Hughes recalled Lance’s dedication.
“He was outstanding,” Hughes said, “and he loved this (Aurantia) Park.” Hughes added that Lance had an ongoing war with gophers.
“We’re going to miss him,” Hughes concluded. “We can’t replace him.”

Several others spoke well of Lance and his work for the city.
Valerie Underwood ended the short ceremony with a quote from Ecclesiastes, Chapter 3: “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven ...”
She concluded with verse 23: “ ... there is nothing better than that a man should rejoice in his own works, for that is his portion.”

Lance was the son of the late: Howard and Helen (Demoplos) Arnegard.

Lance D. Arnegard
Was born on March 3, 1954 in Oklahoma City, OK to Howard Arnegard and Helen (Demoplos) Arnegard. He left his physical body on April 22, 2015 after surgery at Redlands Community Hospital.

Survivors include his sister, Valerie (Arnegard) Underwood and her husband, Jeff, of Fairborn, OH; his Aunt Jane (Mrs. Don Arnegard) of Redlands, CA; cousins Mark Arnegard of Flagstaff, AZ and David Arnegard and family of Foster City, CA and all of the family of Bill Lough of San Bernardino including his precious Tasha Zacharko.

After completing his schooling in the Putnam City Public Schools of Oklahoma City, he came to Redlands in 1978 to work with his Uncle Don in the Inland Empire Plumbing and Septic System business. The loves of his life were fishing, bowling and his two dogs, Mickey and Minnie. While a long-term resident of Redlands, it was in his later years that he found his "home" in the City of Highland working in the City's Public Works department. He was named the City of Highland Chamber of Commerce Employee of the Year for 2010.

A Celebration of Lance's Life was held on May 1, 2015 at his favorite park, Aurentia Park in Highland. Lance would want to be remembered by donations made to any favorite pet or pet rescue charities.
