Richard was the son of Isaac and Mahala (Allen) Askew. He was married to Margaret Reynolds. Children included Alfred, Harriet, Archibald, John, Ida, Charles, and Thomas.

was born in Sumner County, Tenn., September 28, 1830, and died April 12, 1914, at the ripe old age of 83 years, 5 months and 12 days. In August, 1853, he was married to Miss Margaret Reynolds, nine children being born to this union. Truly a good man has been called hence. In his death the club has lost a beloved member and the community an upright and useful citizen. To his family we express our heartfelt sympathy on their great bereavement.
