Helen Avery Williams SUMMERVILLE - Helen Avery Williams (Mrs. McChord Williams) passed away at the Hospice Center of Charleston in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina on Sunday, September 30, 2012. She was born November 11th, 1912, in Boston, MA, the daughter of Alma and Herbert Avery, and was the eldest of eight children. Helen attended Boston College and graduated from Iowa State University, where she was a proud member of Alpha Delta Pi. In 1941 she married Dr. McChord Williams, MD. The couple made their home in Charlotte, NC where he practiced surgery for 35 years. Helen often remarked that her priorities were the Lord Jesus, her family and her community. She was active in the Mecklenburg Medical Society Alliance, The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra Guild, of which she was a president, The Charlotte YWCA, of which she was a president, The Spectator Book Club, The Cranford Book Club and many others. Helen was an active member of Myers Park Methodist church and a volunteer chaplain at Douglas Municipal Airport. She was also a member of both the DAR and The Society of Mayflower Descendents. Helen was predeceased by her husband and two of her siblings. She is survived by a daughter, Anne Williams Gaither of Summerville, SC, two grand-daughters, Amanda Gaither Nottingham (Shawn) and Jennifer Gaither Ciali (Craig), and one great grandson, McChord Royce Nottingham; a son, Alden Avery Williams of Loudon, TN, his wife Jane, two granddaughters, Jaan Anne Williams Kelly (Mike) and Maggie Williams, a great granddaughter, Piper Alden Kelly, and a great grandson, Wilkes Crawford Kelly. She is also survived by Ebony Ross, her dear friend and guardian angel for the last four years of her life. Visitation will be held from 6-8 PM on Friday, October 5, 2012 at Dyal Funeral Home, 303 S. Main St., Summerville, SC. The memorial service will be held at 10:00AM on Saturday, October 6, 2012 in the chapel at the Village of Summerville, 201 W. 9th N. St., Summerville, SC. The family will accept flowers, but also memorials may be made to Summerville Meals on Wheels or to The Singers of Summerville.
