Gene was born in the Germany Community, the son of Oscar Ellis and Surfornie Moore Bolton. Gene united with the New Pleasant Hill Baptist Church at an early age. He graduated from Ralph Bunche High School, where he excelled in all sports: football, being his favorite. Gene and longtime teammate, the late Freddie Marshall, were among the first African Americans to attend Rangers Junior College in Kilgore, Texas.

When he returned to Crockett, he married Ronnye Faye Lewis. They were the parents of two children. While living in Crockett, he worked for Crockett Sand and Gravel as well as Vulcraft in Grapeland. After relocating his family to Lancaster, California, Gene was employed by Lockhead Martin where he worked as a machinist for over thirty years.

Preceding him in death, his parents; his wife Ronnye; his brother Bill and his sister Barbara.

Services were held at Joshua Memorial Chapel in Lancaster, California and St Luke Baptist Church in Crockett. Interment followed in the Germany Community Cemetery.
