Lawrence H. (Peck) Cornell, formerly of 85 Sixth St., S.W., died Thursday evening at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home at the age of 78.

The funeral service will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Welter Funeral Home with the Rev. John Dreibelbis officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Lawrence Herbert Cornell was born Oct. 5, 1895, at Mapleton, Minn., to Judd and Alberta Cornell. He was graduated from Mapleton High School and attended Mankato Commercial College. He served in World War I after which he came to Huron in 1919. He married Ida M. Skinner, June 25, 1921, at Huron.

Cornell was employed by the James Valley Bank one year and after a year with the Costain Music Store, he began employment in 1922 with the City National Bank, which consolidated with First National Bank. In 1924, he joined the staff of the National Bank of Huron, currently Norwest Security National Bank, of which he was vice president at the time of his retirement in October, 1960. He received a 40-year pin from the South Dakota Bankers Association that year.

He served as treasurer of the South Dakota State Fair for 18 years under five governors. He served on the Huron City School Board, Beadle County rationing board during World War II and was treasurer of the Beadle County USO. He was a member of the Beadle County Emergency Crop and Feed Loan committee in the 1930s.

Cornell was a member of the American Legion and was a past commander of William Reaves Post 7. He was a member of the Last Man's Club, Elks Lodge and a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, served on the vestry and was church treasurer for two years.

Survivors include one son, Lawrence Jr., Sioux Falls; three grandchildren; one brother, Merle, Bellevue, Neb.; and one sister Mrs. Ralph (Hazel) Rockwood, St. Paul. He was preceded in death by his wife Ida, July 21, 1972, his parents and three brothers.

Pallbearers will be Harry B. Sanders Grand Van Duzee, George Manolis, Paul Flanagan, James Avery and Keith Montgomery.
