After basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station he was sent to the South Pacific for wartime duty. He achieved Boatswain’s Mate First Class by the end of his tour in 1945. He returned to Iowa.
Goldie had been a U.S. Navy Wave, having enlisted on July 24, 1945 in Milwaukee. She was sent to Hunter College in New York City where she received training for the Navy Hospital Corp. Her father’s unexpected death interrupted her plans and she received a dependence discharge on February 7, 1946 at Washington, DC. She returned home to Iowa where she accepted a blind date with Bob. They were married three months later in the First Baptist Church in Mason City in 1946.
Upon completion of his first tour, Bob re-enlisted for another four years. He was sent to San Francisco where he shipped out on the USS Helena (CA-75), a Baltimore Class Heavy Cruiser. In December of 1948, the ship returned to Long Beach, CA and Goldie was then able to join him. Bob completed his enlistment in 1949 and the couple returned to Iowa where they farmed for the next seven years near his boyhood home.
After moves to Texas, Arizona and Las Vegas, the couple moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL where Bob went to work in the lawn service industry. After his retirement in 1989 the couple moved north to near Gainesville, FL.
In retirement, Bob actively pursued his interest in woodworking. One of his specialties was making quilt frames. He also gave many hours to AARP where he served as an officer in their local chapter. In 1999 he lost a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
