Son of William Garris & Elizabeth Cox Briley. Married Martha Vaden of Georgia abt. 1839, they had 11 children. He moved from Athens, GA, to Anson County, NC at the request of his Uncle James Garris. At James Garris' death, he inherited his uncle's plantation and slaves. In 1877, he gave 1.9 acres of land to his house servant, Aaron, and a church, Garris Grove Missionary Baptist Church was erected on the property. After the death of his first wife, he married Sarah Margaret Smith, and they had one son.
