Elmer Melzer was born in Courtland, Minnesota, on July 15, 1901, the son of Henry and Amelia (Wentland) Melzer. He attended rural school near Courtland and moved with his parents to Drake, North Dakota, at age 16, where he worked on the home farm. On March 19, 1924, Elmer was united in marriage to Anne Beutler in Towner, North Dakota. The couple farmed in Drake until 1926 when they moved to Kensel, North Dakota, where they continued farming until 1939. At this time they moved to Osakis where they again ran a farm. The couple retired in 1949 and moved into Alexandria. Ann died in 1974, and Elmer was united in marriage to Julia Bolstad on August 21, 1976, at the East Moe Lutheran Church. The couple lived in Alexandria. Elmer worked for several years as a parking lot attendant for the First National Bank in Alexandria.
He died April 16, 1985, at the Douglas County Hospital at the age of 83 years. Elmer is survived by wife: Julia Melzer of Alexandria; daughter: Mrs. Ben (Zinnola) Froemming of Alexandria; step-daughters: Mrs. Murald (Arlyne) Zarbok of Garfield; Mrs. Delbert (Esther) Pooler of Eagle Bend; step-son: Daniel Bolstad of Alexandria; brothers: Wilbur Melzer of Nelson and Louie Melzer of New Ulm. Also surviving are 2 grandchildren, four step grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were April 19, 1985 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Alexandria, Minnesota with Rev. Stephen Bruening and Rev. Robert Brueske officiating. Interment was in Kinkead Cemetery, Alexandria, Minnesota. Pallbearers were Randy Zarbok, Todd Zarbok, Greg Pooler, Delten Melzer, DeLair Melzer and Reuben Melzer. Arrangements with Anderson Funeral Home.
