He was married first to Grace Whorton. He & Grace lived in Claremore OK & he worked in the brick plant. It closed & they moved to Coffeyville KS where they separated & Bill convinced himself that Thomas was not his child. When he moved to Wichita, he worked for the brick factory & then opened a combination truck stop & grocery store. He brought his half-sisters to Wichita as waitresses after they graduated from high school. He also sold coal.
