Joel came into the world on Christmas Day, the first child born to David Sheppard Anglin and Harriet Wheeler, who married on 13 Mar 1845 in Kosciusko Co., Indiana. I found four children for the couple, but there may have been others—Joel (1846-1910), James (1848-1938), Lucinda (b.circa 1850) and Mary (1852-1871).

I found the family on the 1850 Census, living in Prairie, Kosciusko Co., Indiana, where David Anglin, aged 32, was farming for a living. Harriet, aged 20, was home with their two young sons—Joel, aged 3, and James, aged 1. Daughter Lucinda would join the family later that year, followed by daughter Mary in 1852.

Sadly, the year after Mary’s birth, Joel’s mother Harriet died on 16 Mar 1853 at age 22.

Joel’s father David remarried circa 1855, exchanging vows with Martha J. (surname unknown). David and Martha had at least seven children together—John W. (b.circa 1856), Abbie A. (1858-1910), Andrew (b.circa 1861), George (b.circa 1863), Hiram M. (1864-1937), Emma (b.circa 1867), and Orris/Ora E. (b.circa 1869).

I found the family on the 1860 Census, still living in Prairie, Kosciusko County, the nearest post office in Galveston. David, aged 41, was busy farming. Martha, aged 25, would have had her hands full at home caring for a household with six children in it—Joel, aged 13, James, aged 12, Lucinda, aged 10, Mary, aged 8, John W., aged 4, and Abbie, aged 1. Also living with the family was David’s older sister Rachel Anglin, aged 52.

When the 1870 Census came around, the family was living in Etna, Kosciusko County. David, aged 53, was still farming. Martha, aged 33, was keeping house. Home with her that census year were Joel, aged 23, James, aged 22, Lucinda, aged 20, Mary, aged 18, John, aged 12, Abbie, aged 10, Andrew, aged 9, George, aged 7, Hiram, aged 5, Emma, aged 3, and Orris, aged 1. David’s sister Rachel Anglin, aged 63, was still living with the family and likely a welcome pair of extra hands.

Two years after that census, Joel married Caroline Henry on 22 Sep 1872 in Kosciusko Co., Indiana. Women reported how many children they had had on both the 1900 and 1910 census records. In 1900, Caroline gave six. In 1910, she gave only 4. On both records she indicated that only three of those children were still living. Those children were George Franklin, born on 7 Oct 1873 in Inwood, Marshall Co., Indiana, Ida B., born circa 1878, and Mary E., born on 7 May 1887.

I found Joel’s family on the 1880 Census, living in Plymouth’s Center Township, Marshall Co., Indiana. Joel, aged 33, was farming. Caroline, aged 33, was home with George, aged 6, and Ida, aged 2. Daughter Mary would join the family seven years down the road.

As the 1890 Census was burned to a crisp in a fire, it is difficult to check in with a family that decade. I did find a marriage record for Joel and Caroline’s daughter Ida, who married Elias B. Hess on 17 Dec 1899 in Marshall County.

The 1900 Census found the family still living in Plymouth’s Center Township. Joel, aged 53, was still busy with the farm. Caroline, aged 53, was home with son George, aged 26 and helping with the farm, and daughter Mary, aged 13. Also there was 3-year-old Louis G. Anglin, identified as a grandson. This child was actually a granddaughter named Lois, and was George’s daughter. George had married first-wife Mary A. Gibson on 19 Feb 1896 in Marshall County. Mary was the daughter of Peter Gibson and Mary Callon. Lois arrived in 1897 and Mary died the following year, widowing George at age 25. With an infant daughter to care for, George had turned to his parents, who took them in. George would marry for a second time later in 1900, exchanging vows with second-wife Laura Stanley on 14 Sep 1900 in Marshall County. George’s daughter Lois would stay with her grandparents.

In 1910, Joel and Caroline were still in Plymouth’s Center Township. Joel, aged 63, had retired. Caroline, aged 62, was keeping house. Daughter Mary, aged 23, was still at home with her parents. Also still there was 12-year-old Lois, correctly identified as a granddaughter on that census.

Sadly, later that same year, Joel died on the 4th of July at age 63.

The year 1915 would have been a mix of joy and sadness for the family. Early in the year, Joel and Caroline’s daughter Mary would marry Ray E. Conger on 28 Feb 1915 in Marshall County. Ray was the son of W.H. Conger and Lottie Smith. That same year, Joel and Caroline’s son George would lose Laura, his wife of fifteen years. She would have only been about 35 years old. George mourned her loss for two years before marrying for a third time, his third wife Rebecca McCullough, whom he married on 20 Mar 1917 in Marshall County.

Caroline, widowed, aged 72, appeared on the 1920 Census, still living in Plymouth’s Center Township. She was listed as head of household. There with her were daughter Mary, aged 32, and Mary’s husband Ray Conger, aged 39 and working as a weigh master for Inland Steel.

Seven years after that census, Caroline left to meet her maker on 25 Jan 1927. Her mortal remains were gently laid to rest next to Joel, her companion and helpmate of thirty seven years of her life.
