He was a Baptist. He served in the Merchant Marines. He was actively involved in the oil and gas exploration industry for 25 years, and retired from Hartford Steam Boiler Insurance Company in 1981. He enjoyed taking care of his pets, Honey and Scooter.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Aberdeen with Brother Todd Bowen officiating.
Burial will be in Center Hill Cemetery in Hamilton.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Vivian Berry Benefiel; two daughters, Sandra Winfrey-Putze and husband, Brian Putze, of Richmond, Virginia, and Patricia Holloway and husband, Danny, of Hamilton; a brother, Coleman Benefiel and wife, Judy, of Murray, Kentucky; five grandchildren, Kandy Bowen Ringquist and husband, Jon, of Los Angeles, John Edward Bowen and wife, Regina, of Chesterfield, Virginia, Christie Bowen Kirkpatrick and John of Aberdeen, and Matt Holloway and Chad Holloway, both of Hamilton; seven great-grandchildren, Blake Auston Bowen, Jake Alston Kirkpatrick, Jon Lennart Ringquist II, Bryson Alexander Bowen, Madison Louise Kirkpatrick, Preston Paul Winfrey and Richard Louis Gele III; two nephews; seven nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Carl and Albert Benefiel; a sister, Gracie Mae Higgins; and a nephew, Terry Coleman Benefiel.
Pallbearers will be John Edward Bowen, Matt Holloway, Chad Holloway, John Kirkpatrick, Tony Benefiel and Curtis Hill.
Honorary pallbearers will be Chet Meaux, Bill Tucker, Richard Mason, Charles Cherry and Dr. Ben Moore.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
