Mary Marjorie Garrett died on March 25, 2006 at the age of 83. She was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Neill Garrett. After graduating from Roosevelt High School, she attended Iowa State College at Ames, Iowa, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics, with a specialty in Foods and Nutrition. She was active in the Home Economics Club, Health Council, the YMCA, and certain student publications. She was a member of Delta Zeta, a national social sorority.

After college, she worked part-time in the test kitchens of Better Homes and Gardens. In 1946, she became Assistant Director of the Dairy Council in the Quad Cities in Rock Island, IL, and then was Executive Director of the Dairy Council of Des Moines, IA. She then moved to Chicago, IL, and became Program Consultant at the National Dairy Council. Mary worked for the Dairy Council for 41 years.

The National Dairy Council has a network of offices throughout the United States. Mary provided training and support services to the professional staffs and Board of Directors of these offices.

She then founded and became editor of Paradigms , a publication of current nutrition education and research information to inform the units of events pertinent to the Dairy Council. She was also active in strategic long range planning for the National Dairy Council.

She lived in Barrington, IL, a suburb of Chicago, until she retired in 1988 and moved to Williamsburg, VA, where she became a resident of Ford's Colony. Mary took part in many of the activities the Colony, took courses with the Christopher Wren Association and enjoyed plays and concerts. In 1993-94, she went on the Homeowners' Advisory Board of Ford's Colony and was elected Chairman in her second year. In the fall of 2004, she moved to Williamsburg Landing, where she lived until her death.

Mary is survived by two sisters, Martha Jackson of Bethesda, MD and Priscilla Evans of Williamsburg, VA, two nieces, Cate Evans of Williamsburg, VA and Julie Evans of Des Moines, IA and four nephews, John Evans of Glen Ellyn, IL, William Jackson of Bethesda, MD, Robert Jackson of Manassas, VA and James Jackson of Greensboro, NC.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon, April 1, 2006 at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, 215 Richmond Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, at Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines, IA.

In lieu of flowers, her family has asked that memorial donations be given in her name to Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, 215 Richmond Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185-3534.
