Odessa Dodd Harris, 96, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, in Arthur B. Hodges Nursing Home, Charleston, W.Va. She was born in Charleston on June 17, 1905. She was predeceased by her husband, Jackson O. Harris; her parents, Charles Edward and Elizabeth "Betty" Susan Dodd. Survivors: sister-in-law, Ann Dodd; nieces, Zoe Sarrett and Roxalana Hamer of Charleston, Clara Mae Munson of Georgia, and Betty Dodd, living out of state; nephews, William L. Dodd, Earl, Albert, and Ernest Hissom, all of Charleston, James E., Charles E., and John R. Dodd, living out of state. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, served in various offices of Charleston Chapter of the DAR, was a member of Tiskelwah Chapter 45 of the Eastern Star, the White Shrine, and Myrtle Rebekah Lodge, and served on the volunteer board of the Union Mission. Writing about her on the occasion of her 96th birthday, Sandy Wells of the Charleston Gazette said, "She was a fixture at the Stone and Thomas Beauty Salon from the time it opened in 1948 until she retired in 1972. Manager for the Glenby Company, Mrs. Harris ran the salon with an iron fist that could never quite hide the soft heart behind it."
