Mary Jane Hickerson was born in Tennessee to Charles Niles Hickerson (b.Tennessee) and Margaret Jane White (b.Georgia). In the 1860 US Census, her family was living in Franklin County, Tennessee. In the 1870 US Census, her family was living in Missouri. Finally, her family moved to Texas in 1876, and remained there. Mary Jane first married James Constantine Lake in McLennan County on May 15, 1878. Before J.C. Lake died, they had 3 children together: Sadie Lane Lake (who married A.Y. Mitchell), James C. Lake and William Henry "Will/Willie" Lake. After Mary married Philip Speegle on September 18, 1890, the widow Mary Lake became the 4th and last surviving wife of Philip Bible Speegle, who preceded her in death by 2 years. Mary and Philip had one child together, Susanna "Susie" Speegle, who married J.W. Calaway on August 19, 1911. When Mary died, she was most likely buried in the Speegleville Cemetery, which had to be moved when their land was made into an extension of Lake Waco, by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
