The son of Frederick F. & Ellen K. (Harbach) Albright, in 1860 he was a clerk living with his well-to-do family in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 3" tall and had auburn hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served four terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Lancaster with the regular army August 25, 1862, and assigned as a private to Co. G, 18th U.S. Infantry. He deserted to date November 3, 1862, at a location not noted in his service records.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Lancaster June 16, 1863, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg June 30 as a private with the six-month organization of the Independent Battery I Pennsylvania Light Artillery, and honorably discharged with the battery January 7, 1864.
3. Enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Lancaster July 8, 1864, mustered into federal service at Philadelphia July 15 as a private with Co. C, 197th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company November 11, 1864.
4. Enlisted at the stated age of nineteen at Harrisburg April 4, 1865, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. B, 215th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 31, 1865, at Fort Delaware.

His obituary in the Lancaster New Era erroneously claims "he served through the Civil War" which isn't quite what happened.

On May 15, 1886, he entered the soldiers' home at Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, suffering with a bad back, but left at his request August 18, 1886. He returned October 4, 1890, again left at his request May 4, 1892, entered a third time on August 10, 1898, and left for the final time on October 6, 1899. He died in Lancaster County Hospital reportedly from chronic gastritis.

Given his erratic reports of age in his four enlistments, his actual age is a bit of mystery.
