James Tate was born in Marshall County Tennessee to William L Tate and Sarah V Edwards Tate. He, his father, his brother, and two sister's husbands were all farmers. His father joined the Union Army's 13th Tennessee Cavalry during the Civil War when James was 13. James never saw his father again. His father was captured a few months later at Fort Pillow Tennessee and died in the Confederate prison camp known as "Andersonville". After the war the family was scattered. In 1870 James was working as a domestic servant in Weakley County Tennessee, his mother was working as a housekeeper in Weakley county and had his sister, Susan with her. His older sister had married and his brother, John, was working for his brother-in-law in Henry County Tennessee. James married about 1875 and had 2 children living out of 4 in 1900. He died in 1920. His widow, Sarah lived another 15 years. They are both buried at Corinth Church, Sharon, Weakley County, Tennessee.
