Floretta Mae Drury was born on December 18, 1853, in Cumberland, Illinois, to John Drury and Mary Mcartney.

Etta, as she was known, first married or had a child with a "Mr. Woodall". Shen then married James John L. Shaw in 1880 in Taylor, Iowa. They had seven children during their marriage.

James John Shaw divorced Etta on Nov. 18, 1910. The divorce papers accuse Etta of cruelty and he claims she came after him with a knife. He sought custody of his youngest son, Leslie, and Robert Shaw, who had physical impairments.

In May 1918 Floretta married a man named Elias Cook. They were only married for four months before she died.

She died on September 21, 1918, in Harlan, Iowa, at the age of 64. According to "Iowa, Select Deaths and Burials, 1850-1990" It is believed that she was buried in Harlan, Iowa under the name "Etta Cook".
