Florence I. Magnuson, our beloved mother, passed away on April 9, 2015, surrounded by her loving family in Brookfield, Wis. Married in 1945, she is predeceased by her husband, Harry J. Magnuson. Together they had five children: James (1946-1991), Cynthia (Marx), Bruce, Jeff and Mary (Magnuson-Sipek). She was the inspirational rock of our family; our tower of strength, our mother. Born to the late John and Catherine Pazynski, mom was raised on her family's farm in Marinette. This is where her unparalleled work ethic began. Among so many other things, mom was an activist for social justice; she spoke out against discrimination and inequality towards all, but especially women. She protested the Vietnam War (and every war thereafter) and worked tirelessly in promoting other women by assisting many in finding work, offering them support and insisting upon fairness in the workplace. Mom was an active member of the Marinette County Democratic Party and for years was the only Democratic public official in Marinette County. She proudly called herself a "Dem-O-crat." Commencing in 1972 and for every two years thereafter, our mother ran for, and was overwhelming elected, to serve Marinette County as its Register of Deeds; she served in such capacity for 20 years. Upon her retirement from that office, she continued to serve her community for another 12 years as a Supervisor on Marinette's County Board. Her commitment to excellent public service was beyond reproach. Inspired, and after "really" retiring, Mom worked in her magnificent garden, quilted endlessly and entertained her dear friends with "neat" luncheons at her lovely home. Florence I. Magnuson was a woman of substance; a woman like no other. She will be painfully missed, daily, by her caring children. And, having learned so much from their "Gram," she will be missed greatly by her loving grandchildren, Chad Magnuson, Michael and Anna Sipek and her great-grandchildren, Cole and Drew Magnuson. She will also be missed by her very special daughter-in-law, Darcey (née Rondeau) Magnuson. Friends may call at Hansen-Onion-Martell funeral home in Marinette on Saturday, May 2, 2015, from 12 noon until 2 p.m. A service in remembrance of the life of Florence I. Magnuson will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery. (Marinette-Menominee Eagle Herald, 16 April 2015)
