An Aged Resident of Bald Eagle
John Lewis, one of the oldest residents of Snyder township, died at his home near Bald Eagle, last Wednesday night or Thursday morning of heart disease. The time of his death is not known, as without warning of the approaching end, Mr. Lewis had retired on Wednesday night and was found dead in his bed the next morning. The funeral took place Saturday morning, interment being made at Nearhoof Cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev. James Walk.
The deceased had resided almost all his life in Bald Eagle valley where the Lewis family has been for the past century among its sturdiest and best citizens. He was born in this famous valley and afterward removed to Sinking Valley, but about thirty-five years ago he returned to Bald Eagle and took up his residence on the farm upon which he remained until his death. Throughout his life he had followed the occupation of farmer.
Mr. Lewis was possessed of those estimable qualities of true manhood which earned and held for him the perfect esteem of all who knew him. Upright and reliable, he was held in the highest regard. He was a member of the Baptist communion and was ever faithful to his Christian belief. In the family he was a loving husband and a kind father whose taking away leaves a void never to be filed.
His partner in life passed away twenty-three years ago and one child also preceded him to the grave. Surviving him are seven sons and two daughters: Ephraim, Samuel, Harriet, Miles, James, David, and Annie Eliz of Bald Eagle valley; Martin, of Scot; and Joshua, of Tyrone. He is survived by one brother and one sister, Samuel Lewis and Mrs. Nancy Weaver, of Bald Eagle valley. The decease was aged 80 years and 4 months at the time of his death.
