Avery Vernon Tucker was born June 15, 1917 on the family farm, three miles west of North Buena Vista, IA. He attended country school, then graduated from Guttenberg High School. He attended Iowa State College at Ames for three and one half years. He was induced into the Army for recruit training in Louisiana at Camp Polk. Later he was sent to officers traing school at Ft. Knox, KY where he was commissioned as a second lieutenant and was assigned to the Seventh Armored Division at Camp Polk. He was at Camp Coxcomb, CA, the Ft Benning, Georgia. After that he was assigned to General Patton's Third Army on Aug 1944. He served four and a half years being discharged with the rank of Captain on Jan 3, 1946.
On Oct 29, 1942 he married Helen Flickinger.
After being discharged from the Army he joined the National Guard for four years. He farmed in Buchanan Co, for 20 years, worked for 13 years at Amoco Foam Products in Oelwein.
He and Helen traveled for 10 years in a travel trailer, then settled into an apartment in Oelwein.
Avery died April 11, 2015. His body was donated to the University of Iowa at his request.
He was predeced in death by his wife Helen of 70 year.
He is survived by his daughters, Mary Jane (Dick) Svoboda of Aurora, Linda Wainwright, Grandville, MI, a son Loren Tucker of Virginia City, Mt. He has 16 gtandchildren and one great grandchild.
