Mereka S. Martin, 52, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at the Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center. Mereka was born Jan. 17, 1963, in Harrisonburg, Va., and raised in the scenic Shenandoah Valley town of Shenandoah.

She attended Page County High School, where she participated in cheerleading and the yearbook, along with many other activities. Mereka earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Virginia in 1985, and worked as a registered nurse in Fredericksburg and Atlanta for 15 years. She had a lifelong love for all things U.Va. and enjoyed rooting for the Wahoos in sports, including attending many football games.

Mereka was married to Richard (Rick) Martin Jr. on Nov. 23, 1985. They lived in the Fredericksburg area since then. She had increasing disability from Multiple Sclerosis over the last 20 years. In the face of overwhelming adversity she was always positive, friendly, and very outgoing. Mereka never once complained about her situation, even in private. Cats always had a special place in her heart. She adopted them from shelters and neighborhood strays. There’s no doubt she is a celebrity in kitty heaven. She leaves behind her loved felines, Oscar, Felix and Greyson.

Survivors include her devoted husband of 29 years, Rick; brother, Henry Morris and wife, Emily, of Harrisonburg; and brother John Burner Jr. and wife, Charlotte, of Shenandoah. She was predeceased by her parents, Vada and John Burner, and brother, Perry Burner.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, May 2, near Harrisonburg, Va.
