Henry Ulke, who was an artist, participated in the 1848 revolution in Berlin. After coming to the United States he painted over 100 portraits of high government officials. His portrait of President U.S. Grant hangs in the White House today. He was also an amateur entomologist, amassing a large collection of beetles.
